Sanded Spoons

Sanded spoons are the first type of spoon that I began making.  The spoons are created from locally sourced lumber that has been well seasoned.  I trace out a pattern of the different spoons on the board.  I then cut the spoons out using a band saw.  Then all of the initial rough blanks are turned on their sides and the next profile is then traced on each spoon.  Next, the spoons are sanded with increasingly finer grit sanding belts until the shape is right, the feel is right and the spoon is smooth to the touch.

The sanded spoons are then soaked in water to raise the grain and ensure that any cracks become apparent.  The spoons are then sanded with a fine grade flap sander to remove the raised 'hairs' of the wood.

After all the sanding is completed the spoons are oiled using Howard's Cutting Board Oil.  This is a food grade mineral oil that is enriched with Vitamin E.  The grain pops and the color of the wood shines through.  Each spoon receives four coats of mineral oil then they are allowed to dry for several weeks.  This allows the oil to polymerize inside the wood and give it lasting protection.  Finally, each spoon is hand rubbed using Howard's Butcher Block Conditioner.  This is a mixture of Food Grade Mineral Oil and Natural Waxes.

Due to each spoon being individually cut out and sanded, no two are ever exactly the same.  The blades will vary slightly and each handle has its own feel.
